I am a 32 year old wife and mother of 2 small children. I am a very
clean person. Shower frequently, keep very good care of my hands and
feet, and keep a relatively clean house (considering I have two
children!). The only on going aliments I've ever suffered from are
migraines and indoor allergies. Never any skin problems.

But I was just diagnosed with Pomphlox - Dyshidrotic Eczema this
morning.

It first started out as one little blister on my right pinky finger.
Im a web designer and Im on my computer all day long. So at first I
thought I'd gotten the blister from my pinky rubbing across the mouse
pad so often, every workday. It felt weird, but otherwise seemed okay.
Then a few days later, 2 or 3 more showed up, and the side of my pinky
felt numb. In the shower, I ended up rubbing my pumice block over it
and they popped, producing some blood and PAIN! I bandaged my finger
up that night, neosporin, bandaid etc. It seemed okay for a while,
then got worse.

Then my right foot started acting up as well. Severe itching, and then
exploded in larger and small blisters. I couldnt even walk on it, it
hurt so bad. If I put any pressure in the places with the big
blisters, pain would shoot up my ankle. I couldnt wear normal shoes,
and had to restort to flip flops.

So I went to the doctor, and he diagnosed me with a bad case of
athelete's foot. Perscribed some Nizarol antibiotic pills and Nizarol
cream. I ended up missing a few days of work. But it started to get
better, then worse, then better with the worse again. And didnt do
anything for my finger.

After a few weeks, my foot was a freakin' MESS! . Some areas, below my
toes, were all callosed across the padded part and other sections had
been burned away revealing angry raw skin. And it seemed it was
spreading all over it. Then I noticed it on my left hand. Seemed like
it had to be contagious! How could it start on my right pinky finger,
get to my right foot, and then over to my left hand, if it wasn't? The
itching has driven me CRAZY! It wakes me up in the middle of the
night. It interferes with EVERYTHING. Im constantly rubbing my hands
across my leg when Im sitting. The best days are when Im wearing my
cordaroy pants! And I just rub my foot across the carpet. The
friction feels good.

My foot, I can hide. My fingers, I cant. Its so embarrassing!! Ive had
my pinky wrapped up for weeks now. A normal cut would have healed by
now. I know people are noticing. My mood has totally dimished.
Generally, Im a pretty talkative and friendly person. But now my co-
workers are constantly asking me "You've been so quiet. Are you okay?"
And I know Im not. Im so stressed out about this thing. (And now I
know that makes it worse!! Oh my god, how the heck am I supposed to
get better?)

Anyway, I couldnt take it anymore and went back to the doctor. Saw a
different one. That one still thought it was a severe case of
athelete's foot. He was such a prick! Stood over me, with that
condescending "why arent you taking care of yourself?" look in his
eyes. God how I hate that. I came to him for comfort, and get nothing
but rebuke.

He referred me to a dermotologist, who I finally got to see this
morning. She took a scraping of my foot, and found it to be fungus
free. Which I was very glad for, because its contagious and I was so
worried I was going to give it to my kids. But then she told me the
bad news. Pomphlox - Dyshidrotic Eczema. Id never even heard of it
before. My mother has eczema, but it doesnt look ANYTHING like this.

The dermotologiest prescribed a steroid foam cream called Olux-E and
has told me to take some Benedryl to help sooth the itchiness. Im
going to try it out, and hopefully it will resolve this issue. I
really, really really cant deal with this the rest of my life. Thats
just insane.

This is not a common form of eczema. It's most common in people 20-40.
It starts with itching on the hands and feet, then the blister-like
eruptions. It tends to stay on the hands and feet, not spread to the
rest of the body. STeroids and cold compresses are the standard
treatment.

This is also considered highly reactive to stress. So - hard as it
will be - try some type of relaxation/biofeedback therapy. Some
untested things that MAY help are salt restriction and some (not too
much) sun exposure. But stress reduction is vital. There's some good
info at http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1867.htm Good luck
